7 eCommerce SEO Tips to Rank Higher on Google
If you run an online store, you have probably wondered why your products are not showing up on Google even though you know they are great. The truth is, having a brilliant product is only half the battle. The other half is making sure Google actually knows your store exists and understands what you are selling.
The good news is that most e-commerce stores in the UK are missing the same handful of things. That means fixing them gives you a real head start on your competitors. Here are seven practical eCommerce SEO tips that I use with clients to help their stores climb the Google rankings.
1. Write Better Product Page Titles
Your product page title is one of the first things Google looks at when deciding where to rank your page. If your title just says something like "Blue Candle" or "Style 304", Google has very little to go on.
A simple formula that works really well is:
Product Name + Key Feature + Who It Is For + UK
So instead of "Soy Candle", you might write "Lavender Soy Candle for Better Sleep, Hand Poured in the UK". That title tells Google exactly what the page is about and gives people browsing search results a real reason to click on yours.
2. Target Specific Keywords Rather Than Broad Ones
It can be tempting to go after big keywords like "women's clothing" or "fitness equipment UK", but for a growing store these are really difficult to rank for. You are competing with huge retailers who have been building their SEO for years.
A smarter approach is to target longer, more specific phrases. These are known as long tail keywords and they tend to attract shoppers who are closer to making a purchase. Some examples:
Sustainable gym leggings for women UK
Personalised birthday gifts for mum
Vegan protein powder for weight loss UK
Less competition, more buying intent and usually a much better return on your SEO efforts.
3. Always Write Your Own Product Descriptions
If you have copied product descriptions from a supplier or manufacturer, you are not alone. It is one of the most common things I see. The problem is that Google finds the same words on dozens of other websites and has no real reason to rank yours above theirs.
Take a little time to rewrite your descriptions in your own words. Focus on the benefits rather than just the features. Think about what your customer actually wants to know before they buy and answer that in your copy. Even 150 original words per product can make a genuine difference to your rankings.
4. Speed Up Your Website, Especially on Mobile
The majority of online shoppers in the UK are browsing on their phones. If your store takes more than three seconds to load, a large number of visitors will leave before they have even seen your products. Google factors this into its rankings, so a slow site can really hold you back.
Three things you can do straight away:
Compress your product images before uploading them. Squoosh and TinyPNG are both free and easy to use.
Remove any apps or plugins you no longer use.
Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights and work through the issues it flags.
5. Add Content to Your Category Pages
Most eCommerce store owners put all their SEO effort into product pages and overlook their category pages entirely. This is a missed opportunity because category pages can rank for some of the most valuable search terms in your niche.
Try adding a short paragraph of around 100 to 150 words at the top or bottom of each category page. Mention what the category contains, who it is for, and what makes your products worth buying. Include your target keyword naturally and you will start to see these pages pick up real traction in the search results.
6. Make the Most of Customer Reviews
Customer reviews are brilliant for SEO for two reasons. First, they add fresh and unique content to your product pages automatically, which Google loves. Second, they can trigger star ratings in your search results, which makes your listing stand out and encourages more people to click.
Set up a simple follow up email that goes out to customers after they receive their order and ask them to leave a review. Most people are happy to share their experience if you just make it easy for them. Even a small number of genuine reviews can noticeably improve your click through rate.
7. Use Your Blog to Answer Real Customer Questions
A blog is one of the most powerful tools an eCommerce store has for building organic traffic, but only when it is used strategically. Rather than writing general company updates, focus on answering the questions your ideal customers are already typing into Google.
For example, if you sell skincare products you could write posts like:
The best skincare routine for dry skin in the UK
What does vitamin C serum actually do for your skin
How to layer skincare products, a beginners guide
Every blog post you publish is another page Google can rank and another way for potential customers to discover your store. Start with one post a month and build from there. Consistency always wins over volume.

You do not need to overhaul everything at once. Pick one tip from this list, implement it properly, and then move on to the next. Small and consistent improvements are what move the needle over time.
