Traditional SEO vs AI SEO

If you are a small business owner reading this, chances are you have heard the word SEO thrown around more times than you can count. And now everyone is talking about AI on top of that. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI search, it is a lot. And I completely understand if you are sitting there thinking, "Do I even need SEO anymore? Is AI just going to take over everything?"

I get it. I really do. As someone who has spent four years helping small UK businesses get found on Google, I have had this conversation more times than I can count. And the honest answer, the one I give every single one of my clients, is this: SEO is not dead. But it is changing. And if you want your business to show up in 2026 and beyond, you need to understand both traditional SEO and AI SEO.

So let's break it all down.

What Is Traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the process of making your website and online presence show up when someone searches for something related to your business on Google.

Let me give you a really simple example. Say you run a bakery in Birmingham. When someone types "best bakery in Birmingham" into Google, traditional SEO is what determines whether your bakery shows up on page one or gets buried somewhere nobody ever scrolls to. And let's be honest, if you are not on page one, you are basically invisible.

Traditional SEO has been around for decades, and it is built on a few core pillars:

  • Keywords

  • On-page SEO

  • Google My Profile

  • Backlinks

  • Technical SEO

So What Is AI SEO And Why Does It Matter?

Here is where things get interesting. And honestly, a little bit exciting.

AI SEO is a newer approach to search engine optimisation that takes into account how artificial intelligence is changing the way people find information online. And it is changing things significantly.

Google has been using AI for years to understand search queries and rank results. But in the last couple of years, it has gone a step further. Google's AI Overviews those AI-generated answer boxes that now appear at the very top of many search results are changing the way people interact with search entirely.

And then there is the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI-powered search engines. More and more people, especially business owners, are using these tools to find information. They are asking questions like "what is the best way to get my business found on Google?" and getting direct answers without necessarily clicking through to a website at all.

This is called zero-click search. And it is one of the biggest shifts in SEO right now.

So what does AI SEO actually involve? Let me break it down:

Creating Content That Answers Real Questions

AI search tools are really good at pulling in content that directly answers specific questions. If your website has a blog post or FAQ that clearly answers "how do local businesses get found on Google?" you are far more likely to show up in AI-generated answers than if your website just says "we offer SEO services."

E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

This is a framework Google uses to evaluate content, and it has become even more important in the age of AI. Google and AI tools want to surface content from real experts with real experience. This is why I always tell my clients to share their story, showcase their results, and write content that demonstrates genuine knowledge, not just generic information anyone could write.

Optimising for AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews pull from websites that structure their content clearly and answer questions directly. Using proper headings, writing in a conversational tone, and including clear answers to common questions all help your content get picked up by AI.

Structured Data and Schema Markup

This is a technical element that helps search engines and AI tools understand exactly what your website is about. Things like your business name, location, opening hours, and the type of services you offer. It sounds complicated, but it is actually one of the most impactful things you can do for local businesses.

Voice Search Optimisation

More people than ever are using voice search, either on their phones or through smart speakers. Voice searches tend to be longer and more conversational: "Where is a good SEO consultant near me?" rather than just "SEO consultant Birmingham." Optimising your content for these conversational queries is a key part of AI SEO.

Traditional SEO vs AI SEO: Do You Need Both?

Yes. Genuinely, yes. And here is why.

I see a lot of content online saying that traditional SEO is dead and AI SEO is the future. I disagree. Traditional SEO is the foundation. Without it, nothing else works. If your website is slow, your Google Business Profile is incomplete, and you have no relevant keywords on your pages, AI SEO is not going to save you.

But if you are only doing traditional SEO and ignoring the AI revolution happening in search, you are going to start falling behind your competitors. Are the businesses that are creating genuinely helpful, expert content that answers real questions? They are going to start showing up in places you are not.

Think of it this way. Traditional SEO gets you in the game. AI SEO keeps you competitive as the rules change.

The good news for small businesses is that you are actually in a really strong position here. Big brands and corporations often struggle with the E-E-A-T side of AI SEO because their content is generic and produced at scale. As a small business owner, you have something they do not real experience, real stories, and real expertise. That is genuinely valuable in the age of AI search.

The Bottom Line: SEO in 2026 Is About Being Genuinely Helpful

Here is the thing I always come back to. Whether we are talking about traditional SEO or AI SEO, the businesses that win are the ones that are genuinely helpful to their customers.

Google has always said this. AI has just made it even more true. If your website, your content, and your online presence genuinely help people if they answer real questions, provide real value, and come from real expertise, you are going to do well in search. Full stop.

AI is not replacing SEO. It is raising the bar. And the small businesses that take that seriously, that invest in understanding both traditional and AI SEO, are the ones that are going to stand out in 2026 and beyond.

At Amrita SEO, I help small UK businesses navigate all of this. Whether you are starting from scratch, you have tried SEO before and it did not quite work, or you just want someone to look at what you are already doing and tell you honestly what is working I am here for it.
